Garden Design No. 16 - Fall Harvesting and Entertaining Ideas

Fall Harvesting and Entertaining Idea #1: Don't put the picnic basket away or close up the firepit.

Fall is a great time to have a picnic and enjoy the crisp air around a firepit!

Fall Harvesting and Entertaining Idea #2: Bring those favorite plants inside to enjoy before the frost visits.

And don't be boring about it! Plant that favorite fern in a terrarium. Plant that Salad Burnet in a plastic lined birds nest. And don't forget to time planting those indoor bulbs just right to enjoy beautiful Amaryllis and Paper Whites!

Fall Harvesting and Entertaining Idea #3: Feathered friends need entertaining too!

It's time to start gathering the ingredients for the homemade suet for our feathered friends. And get your tools out to do the maintenance on those birdhouses and feeders. No maintenance required - shop for some additions to the feathered friends' neighborhood of shelters.

Fall Harvesting and Entertaining Idea #5: When harvesting goodies from the garden, recipes shouldn't be the only thing on your mind.

Enjoy them as a seasonal decoration around your home. Think of new ways to decorate with pumpkins and gourds! The kids are older now - it's time for grown-up pumpkin decorating.

And you don't have to give up that water feature you enjoyed all Summer - add a tabletop water feature to your interior space.

Fall Harvesting and Entertaining Idea #6: Fall is for upcycling!

When doing Fall garden clean up here are a few great ideas for enjoying the pruned and broken in fun ways. When pruning branches during end of season garden clean up, think beyond stocking up kindling for winters by the fireplace. Save the long graceful ones and make a wonderful outdoor chandelier for your Fall entertaining!

When we stockpile those empty clay pots away until Spring arrives we notice the new ones that we bought but didn't fill. And we get ready to toss the broken and chipped ones.  New clay pots make great baking vessels for yummy homemade breads. While broken and chipped ones are havens for the croakers that create some great Fall evening sounds.

Fall Harvesting and Entertaining Idea #7: Try new recipes!

We all have those favorite Fall recipes that are tried and true. Go ahead and cook them up, but try some new ones too! You worked hard to grow those fruits and vegies (or at least the farmer you bought them from did). Enjoy them!

To get you started I'm sharing an easy pickle recipe below. You won't be disappointed.

Fast Homemade Pickles
(Source: Martha Stewart)

3 c. white vinegar
1 1/2 c. sugar
2 t. coarse salt
1/2 t. mustard seed
1/2 t. celery seed
2 to 4 small chiles (optional)
1/8 t. tumeric
1 1/2 c. fresh dill frouds (about 1 bunch)
prepared vegetables
(cucumbers, pearl onions, fennel, caulifower)

In a medium saucepan, combine white vinegar, sugar, salt, mustard seed, celery seed, red chiles (optional), and ground turmeric. Bring to a boil, stirring to dissolve sugar. Arrange prepared vegetables and dill fronds in one or more jars. Pour hot brine into jar to completely cover vegetables and seal jar. Refrigerate until cool, about 2 hours (or up to 1 week).
